Concepts and Tools

Here is an overview of the main concepts, language, and tools that a
psychodynamic therapist will use in therapy:

1. Insight/self-awareness driven- focus on building self-understanding
2. Finding Comfort in the discomfort- All emotions are good and
useful, including anger, depression, shame, fear, sadness, and guilt.
The goal is to process emotions, resolve inner/ external conflicts and
unfreeze parts of one's development from their younger selves.
Ultimately we are trying to become more content with the full range of
our emotions, which will help us process them in a healthy way.
3. Free association- no filters of organization, relevance, accuracy,
safety, morality, or sounding smart. Trust the brain to bring things
up and heal itself in a way that the client can handle like it, much
like the way you heal physical ailments.
4 Modeling healthy relationship- The therapeutic relationship is meant
to model and provide an internal map of what a healthy relationship
looks like
5 Internal map- an internal picture to refer to for how to respond to
different relationships
6 Transference- the therapist takes on the role of a person from the past.
7 Objective Counter-Transference - the therapist plays the role that
the client is communicating unconsciously or consciously to the
therapist.
8 Subjective counter-transference- the therapist gets triggered from
what the client's experience and the client takes on the role in the
therapist's eyes of an experience or person from the therapist's past.
